History of Carrefour de l’Estrie
In August 1972, Marcel Adams, President of Développement Iberville ltée, invested in the construction of a major shopping centre in Sherbrooke to be named Carrefour de l’Estrie. This new mall was inaugurated on October 8, 1973.
Located at the junction of Autoroute 410 and Boulevard de Portland and near Autoroute 10, the new site first attracted superstores like Eaton’s, Pascal, Sears, and Steinberg in addition to some one hundred trendy shops.
In 1985, the shopping centre underwent an expansion. A new wing was built at the cost of 10 million dollars with a Zellers outlet at its end; the two-storey store was the first of its kind for this chain. Some sixty shops and a food court were also added to the complex.
In 1999, Maison Simons opened its second store outside the Québec City area at Carrefour de l’Estrie. This new outlet was awarded several world architecture prizes at its opening.
Over the years, different superstores were added on the lots surrounding Carrefour de l’Estrie: Bureau en Gros, Future Shop, Chaussures Yellow, Rona l’Entrepôt, Sears Décor, Winners.
Eaton’s was replaced by la Baie (the Bay) in 2000. In 2001, after 28 years of existence, the mall and central court were revamped with futuristic pillars and skylights.
On December 1st, 2005, the shopping centre was sold 90% to the Canada Pension Plan and 10% to Osmington and Westerkirk Capital. That’s when a management contract was awarded to Redcliff Realty Group.
In addition to superstores, Carrefour de l’Estrie is proud to have the participation of other businesses located within its peripheral area: Addition-Elle/Pennington, Au Vieux Duluth, Bouclair, Centre Hi-Fi, Clinique dentaire Carrefour Santé, Eggsquis, Esso, Lasik MD, Le Grenier, Le Jardin des animaux, Linen Chest, Lunetterie F. Farhat, Mondou, Moores, Deserres, SAQ, Subway and Tim Hortons.
Today, Carrefour de l’Estrie boasts 200 stores, 2,000 employees and 150,000 visitors per week. This major regional mall is at the forefront of fashion trends and supports the regional economy, and is also a reflection of the culture in the Eastern Townships.
